It's true that you - as a teacher - have a lot to share. Perhaps you
have experienced an incredible workshop, taught an innovative course, read
an inspiring book, or worked successfully with at-risk students. Mentor
would like to invite all teachers to write an article for the newsletter
and share that experience. Consider what you have to offer and begin to
write it down.

Mentor editor/publisher, Fred Maybee( fred@baylite.ca
)recently finished writing a book and sending the manuscript to his publisher
for printing. Song writing: A Classroom Approach will be available
later this year. He says the process included:
1) attending seminars on publishing. Local bookstores like Chapters
offer these workshops occasionally.
2) finding a suitable publisher. Check publishers addresses in books
that might be found on the same library shelf as your new book. Find a
complete list of book publishers in your library, but make a small list
so the task is not too daunting. Contact only those publishers who might
say "yes".
3) phoning these publishing companies to talk with the person who will
be making the decision on your book. Find out if your concept is one they
will be interested in. You will narrow down your list this way as well.
4) preparing a query letter with sample chapters from your book, perhaps
the table of contents, first chapter and last.
5) visiting the web site of some of these publishers. They will often
tell you exactly what kind of material they are looking for and what to
include with your query letter.
6) obtaining a contract from your publisher. Sign and return it to
them. They will sign a copy and (eventually) return your copy. At that
point, you know you are both committed to the project.
